Hiring for 2023-2024:  Lead Teacher, Middle Grades

Solid Ground School

Solid Ground School is seeking a Lead Teacher for our Middle Grades program to join us in creating educational transformation for children, families, and teachers through place-based learning.  Our collaborative faculty, beautiful setting, and supportive families make teaching at Solid Ground a joy.  Furthermore, our small class sizes and committed student body make it possible for teachers to develop meaningful relationships with children who return year after year, while the flexibility in our curriculum allows teachers the ability to meet students where they are through project-based learning that puts inquiry at its core.  As an organization that respects teachers as creative and knowledgeable professionals, our Lead Teachers have the opportunity to grow and develop a deep teaching practice centered around teaching children, not curriculum.

Our Middle Grades program is organized into 2 grade bands:  our Saplings (grades 3 & 4) and our Branches (grades 5 & 6).  Our ideal candidate is comfortable working with either age group, has experience with respectful and responsive classroom management strategies, and is knowledgeable about teaching language arts and literacy using effective, research-based strategies.  Serious candidates should have a degree relevant to teaching & learning, experience working with groups of pre-adolescents, and experience in creating and implementing project-based learning approaches in the classroom.

This job is perfect for a teacher who loves working with pre-adolescent children, enjoys developing creative and engaging inquiry-based projects in the classroom, and who appreciates opportunities to collaborate and grow with other faculty.  We offer a flexible and supportive work environment and a compensation package totaling $42,000 per academic year.  This package includes a base salary of $36,000 per 9-month contract (summers off), and an additional faculty benefits package currently valued at $6,000/year, which includes an employer matched retirement plan, student tuition waiver, and/or bonus option that can be used in combination.  For interested candidates, there is also the opportunity to earn additional income through the summer by working with our sister organization, Rising Appalachia, at their RAW summer camp on the property.”

Interested candidates should e-mail a resume, cover letter, and list of 3 references to Christin Butler, Executive Director at Christin@solidgroundschool.com before June 21
